Playboi Carti's "Die Lit" Is The Prime Example Of What's Wrong With Hip-Hop Right Now

It's been said time and time again that the subculture of trap rap is quickly stagnating. Well, it's become just about as stale as it can now. Playboi Carti has sealed the deal. Playboi Carti's Die Lit is the prime example of what's wrong with hip-hop right now, featuring droll songs with dull production and uninspired pulp as lyrics.

Trap music is quickly becoming pulp fiction. The proof is right in the numbers: Die Lit is an hour long, 19 songs of the same, boring beat and weak delivery that make absolutely no impact. The best song on the album is literally the introduction 'Long Time,' and even then it goes on for too long. Playboi Carti jumps on the trend of an empty beat with hi-hats and a trap bass and proceeds to use two words a song. Skepta has a difficult time pulling 'Lean 4 Real' out of its boring march, and even Travis Scott sounds bored in 'Love Hurts.' Even the features sound like they know there's nothing in this record.

Die Lit is the dying breath of a defeated genre. This album should serve as the final mark of this branch of trap music - minimal beats and repeating the same word as the hook in every song has lost all its charm and hype. For the other part of hip-hop that is branching out to more active beats (Lil Pump6ix9ine), there is still hope. When all that can be said about weak tracks like 'Poke It Out' with Nicki Minaj and 'Pull Up' is that they're annoying, something definitely needs to change.

It really feels as if some hip-hop artists are beating a dead horse. The minimal beast of trap is dead, and this record shows it. Playboi Carti's Die Lit is the prime example of what's wrong with hip-hop right now, it's lackluster performance from start to finish truly puts the nail in the coffin for this one. It is time for something to change.
