YoungBoy Never Broke Again Stays Humble In "Until Death Call My Name"

With the rise of trap rap, glorification of a lot of subjects has really been on the rise. There are a select few artists, however, that remember their success isn't theirs alone. It's the product of everyone who's supported them. YoungBoy Never Broke Again stays humble in Until Death Call My Name, but doesn't quite vary things enough.

Like any trap record, Until Death Call My Name is dominated by its beats. For the most part, things are pretty average from the sonic department. Much of the album just falls in the comfortably safe region of beats, songs like 'We Poppin' with Birdman just sounding like any other trap song. 'Diamond Teeth Samurai' adds a bit of drive into the mix, while 'Astronaut Kid' has a gentler, less abrasive atmosphere to it. The worst beat of the mix might just be the Future collaboration 'Right Or Wrong,' which just feels empty under Future's monotonous delivery. For the most part, though, the beats aren't too impressive.

What sets YoungBoy Never Broke Again apart from other rappers is his conviction. Even though some songs do stray to the safer route of money, love, and fame, there are several songs that really feel genuine. The big flow on opening track 'Overdose' really adds credence to YoungBoy's attitude, giving the album a confident sound to begin and sets forward the idea of improvement. 'Preach' follows through with similar flair, though it is much more appreciative. Closing track 'Rags To Riches' is a short story of success, but is moreso a thank you to every one in his life that brought him to this point, including his son, who has his own little part in the song. Even some of the hooks manage to stay memorable, including 'Traumatized' with Lil Baby.

YoungBoy Never Broke Again stays humble in Until Death Call My Name, separating himself from the rest of hip-hop by showing vulnerability and thankfulness. It goes to show that not all rap has to be fantastical and revolving around fame or sex. Music that is conscious that it is the product of many people's support is always going to come from the heart.
